Spy Numbers Stations

“‘59372 98324 19043 78903 95320…’ The mechanized female voice drones on and on… What have you stumbled on to? Instructions to spies? Messages exchanged between drug dealers? Deliberate attempts at deception and mis-information?

“Chances are, all of the above! What you’ve tuned in to is called a “Spy Numbers Station”. They’ve been on the air for several decades, and only recently have the mysteries started to unfold. But there’s still much we don’t know about these mysterious stations. With the information on these pages, you’ll discover the little that we do know about these stations, what we’re still trying to learn, and how you too can tune in to the spies.”

Quoted from SpyNumbers.com

Now whether or not these are actually spys communicationg back and forth, no one really knows, and for most stations, probably won’t ever. There is much speculation around these stations, where tehy’re located, and just plain what the dilly is.

There are a few dedicated to the monitoring and recording of these stations, one of my favorites being The Brian Rogers Home Page which gives those of US who know nothing about Short Wave radios a little overview of a few of the “mainstream” number stations out there. Stations like The Buzzer, The Pip, and my favorite The Workshop are described briefly, usually with sound clips and some speculation on their sources.

Any of the sites you find on the ‘net now are really outdated, though there are a still a few kicking. Those like Enigma 2000 are still providing us netizens will all the quirky info about the mysterious stations. Turning to Google for a search on Numbers Stations yields a few decent results, but the majority of the sites haven’t been updated in years (but when you think about it, why would they be?).

Number Stations are an interesting phenomenon for sure, check it out.
