A Little About Me

Normally I’m not a huge fan of “About Me” sections of websites, because honestly, who cares? Though, since this site is about me and my journey through the ins and outs of opening a freelance web design business, I think a little background is on order.

A Look At Home

I live in an older home which has been converted into decent, livable apartments, located barely 30 seconds from a Tim Hortons. I never have a sortage of caffine!

I stay here with my lovely girlfriend Rachel, whom I’ve been dating nearly 2 years now. We’re a perfect match, and I love her a whole bunch.

My Book Learnin’

I attended the Univesity of New Brunswick to take a Bachelors of Computer Science Degree. I managed to make it through 3 years of post-secondary before I was up to my eyeballs in debt, and had to drop out for lack of funds, and honestly, lack of interest. I plan on going back to finish my degree some day, once I can afford it on my own dime so I don’t be any further in debt with the National Student Loans office.

Informally, I’ve been creating websites since 1998, back when black backgrounds were all the rage, and table-based layouts were essential. I even had a Star Trek website, which was the first I ever created! Now I follow all the rules; every site I design adheres to the common CSS-layout and accessability standards, and I’d like to think they look pretty damn good too!

How I Pay the Bills

I am currently employed at a call centre, and I take calls for two companies. One is a Natural Gas Utility, the other is a HVAC contracting company. My job is interesting, frustrating, hilarous, pays well, but is very hard on the head. I’ve worked there for nearly 2 years now, and that’s just about long enough.

Recreational Activities

Well, I used to be a DJ, spinning hardcore and drum & bass. I had a radio show on the local college radio station for nearly a year, then I had to stop as it was cutting into what little free time I had. I became a bedroom DJ for a while, but found myself practicing less and less. Eventually, one day after my girlfriend called my turntables “dust collectors,” I decided to sell all my gear. It didn’t take long, and I had nearly everything sold with the exception of my mixer. Anyone want to buy a Vestax PCV-150? :)

These days I spend most of my free time outside of being a phone jockey by doing web design or working on one of many the small projects I always have on the go. The I’ve Been Tagged! post also gives a little useless trivia about me.

Why This Blog?

Well, I feel like my career is in a rut. I’m working at a call centre job that I don’t particularly like, but it pays well enough for me to stay, for now. It’s a high-stress, and very frustrating job at times and I am just in the mood for a career overhaul. My “dream” has been to do web design for a living for a while now, and I’m starting to get closer to realizing it. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to start my own web develpment firm with my long-time buddy Dan.

So, here it is. This is my journey; from the bitter start, through to the future of my career, I plan to log my milestones, mistakes, victories and learning experiences in hopes that they can help out others who are thinking of doing the same as I.

My goal for this blog is to keep readers both entertained and informed. I know there are several (hundred?) blogs out there like this one, but I hope to at least be a little original with my content and perhaps readers will have a reason to make return visits.
